The 1960's

 

In France some new pictorial mouvements are appearing : l'Ecole de Nice, le Nouveau réalisme, Support-Surface. An upheaval of the traditions born out of cubism orient painting towards movement and gestures. Nicolas de Staël lived this period to the fullest while on the other side of the Atlantic another revolution is launching, that of Pop Art and of hyperrealism... Alone in his studio rue Notre Dame des Champs near Montparnasse then in Bourg la Reine just outside of Paris, Jean Claude Libert will attain the richness of his art. He paints with a palette knife a large series of oils on canvas, with depth, a period which the critics will name "multi facetted cubism". He transforms memories of landscapes from Provence and from the Languedoc into "inner upheavals", and takes up lyrical abstraction under the influence of dodecaphonic music by listening to Bartok, Alban Berg, Boulez..;
